Volunteers of America Family Emergency Shelter was the “first responder” to address the new phenomenon of family homelessness in Louisville when it opened in 1984 and continues to serve as a vital link between homelessness and stable housing and self-sufficiency.

More than a safety net, the Volunteers of America Family Emergency Shelter also serves as a launching pad, working with families via case management, life skills training and support services to assist them in setting housing, employment, education, and other goals. Children in these families are assisted with tutoring, healthy recreation opportunities, and additional services as a means of preventing future homelessness.

In Fiscal Year 2008, 70 homeless families were served with 74 percent exiting to stable housing.

Family Transitional Housing

Volunteers of America Transitional Housing offers longer term support and housing to homeless families needing additional time to complete educational, employment, and housing goals.

Our staff works with the families in a comprehensive fashion to establish and maintain a viable income while ensuring long-term stability through improved financial literacy, basic home maintenance, and other life skills necessary for sustainable living. Transitional Housing further positions families for reintegration into housing in their new neighborhood as they continue work on their family goals.

Thirty homeless families were served in Fiscal Year 2008, with 95 percent moving out of our program to a place they can call home.
